Blob — the hugging pouf. Looking for ideas for my project I got inspired by a piece, made by Lucy Mcrae called Compression Carpet. The concept of a hugging machine made me look for forms that let a user feel immersed in the furniture. An object that made the most impact on my project was a foldable, portable hairbrush, more specifically the way its elements stick out while open and fold inwards when closed. I wanted to translate this into how the form of seating could work. When not in use it can be raised and look more like a sculpture, but under the weight, it will fold and catch the person using it, with its “tentacles”. For its upholstery, I chose suede in a deep dark red color, which gives me a feeling of intimacy and softness. The overall outcome is a large pouf of furniture that allows you to relax fully and makes you calm by hugging your body when you lay on it.
