Perforated Bin

The perforated bin was born as a response to a real life problem I came across, mostly in kitchens and bathrooms. First was the terrible smell coming out of trash cans which contain organic waste. This problem is usually dealt with by means of a lid but it does not help when one opens the bin to throw in additional waste. Second was the unsightly look of trash cans which have no lid, especially if they contain organic waste.

According to experts, the source of bad odour in domestic trash is anaerobic digestion that takes place in the bin. In order to eliminate the bad smell, fresh air must be in touch with the trash and the digestion products must have a way out to leave it. Following this reasoning the bin with no lid would solve the odour problem. However this creates a new aesthetic problem, especially in carefully designed spaces.

To solve the aesthetic issue I created the perforated lid which allows the air to flow but hides the trash and distracts the eye from it. The lid can come in a variety of designs which can blend into the concept and design of the room. Instead of an ugly, smelly but necessary object bins can now be aesthetic, non smelly design products.
