About Project

OKTOGAMI is a limited-edition coffee table prototype. The table forms part of a project called handcraft 2.0, in which I explore a single process and a single material in each piece of furniture using small scale manufacturing instead of mass production.

The table is the exploration into Carbon Fiber and its possible implementations into residential furniture. The objective of the product is to achieve lightness, performance, and using carbon fiber without losing any structural, ergonomic qualities and to minimize both material usage and fabrication – assembly time.

The design is formed from a single sheet of woven carbon fiber impregnated with epoxy resin to create a strong and light structure. The table is produced with the hands of a craftsman like a piece of traditional applied art, and by layering sheets of carbon fiber cloth into a mold in the shape of the final product. The alignment and weave of the cloth fibers is chosen to optimize the strength and stiffness properties of the resulting material. The mold is then filled with epoxy and is heated or air-cured. Which set to form a rigid structure that is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The table shape is born by using the least amount of material, and achieving a weight of under 300 gr.
