ORO Chair

ORO Chair is built to memorialize the lives and houses that perished in the wildfire in Oroville, CA, reflecting on how humans can better care for the environment.

The chair stand is made from recycled aluminum, mirroring the protective aluminum wraps used by firefighters to shield sequoia trees and human shelters from flames. It traces and reflects the contour of the upper wooden seat, creating a harmonious projection, akin to the lasting impression and memory that a forest leaves in our minds after a wildfire.

The ergonomic seat accommodates both normal and cross-legged sitting positions, fostering a meditative connection with nature through its circular form and rustic materiality. During meditation, users can run their hands along the sides of the chair, sensing the rhythmic pulse of the forest cycle and the unique scars left by the wildfire.

Starting with a straw-woven futon, transitioning to the burned redwood texture, and ending with recycled aluminum, which safeguarded the wood during the disaster. Our call is to protect, restore, and promote the sustainable use of recycled materials; together, we can nurture new forests and halt biodiversity loss with the aid of visualization.
